Stormwater House

The Blue Mountains NSW are home to a unique hideaway, built by a talented Blue Mountains Builder, Greenscape Constructions. Conceived by Architect Alexander Michael and constructed using 16 ton concrete storm water culverts, this eccentric dream home overlooks the Fish River on a rural property just outside of Tarana. The project presented numerous challenges due to limited space for services, but these were met with innovative solutions like 3.2m high plywood sliding doors, 2m wide pivoting glass doors, and 19mm fibre cement sheet for shower walls. Even the tiger snakes couldn't stop the successful completion of this house!

Built with concrete for long-lasting durability, the house is designed to take full advantage of passive solar energy. Fibre cement shade awnings, large curtains, and a future green wall on the exterior facade will all help to conserve energy. The house is also run from a 3.5kW stand alone solar system, eliminating the need for toasters and hair dryers. Additionally, a dam provides water to the newly planted orchard and gardens, and little waste was generated in the construction due to its prefabricated nature. Finally, the house is heated by hydronic underfloor heating and two slow combustion heaters.
